Product Reviews: Eye Liners

As always, the products reviewed here are non-animal tested. Some are vegan. You can check our page, Makeup Without Cruelty, to see which is which.
Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner is a gel liner that comes in a tiny jar. You apply the liner with your own brush (I advise a very thin, but slightly stiff brush - synthetic, of course). The liner goes on beautifully if you can find your perfect brush. If not, you may find it flakes a little bit. The liner also dries quickly, so if you want to smudge the line, do it fast! And keep the jar tightly covered when not in use. I tried the Midnight Black and the Dark Brown. Loved them both. And even though it's waterproof, the liner comes off with plain soap and water, although I always do a once-over with eye makeup remover anyway.
Smashbox Eye Liner. A different texture than the "Jet Set" version, above. It's more of a cream, whereas the "Jet Set" is a gel. Although I love anything Smashbox, I do prefer their gel liners to their creams. The cream (I tried "Caviar") flaked quite a bit on application. Once it was applied, it didn't flake anymore as the day wore on.
Revlon Line Fantasy Cream Eyeliner. I tried the "Black" and (no great surprise) the "Brown", and liked them, but they did tend to flake more than my nerves were happy with. Washed off easily at the end of the day.

Merle Normal Liquid Eye Liner . Everyone gets confused when I ask for this in their store, because they carry so many different types of eye liners. This is the one in the white tube that has the little brush inside it. Nevermind because it used to be my FAVORITE EYE LINER in the world, and THEY. CHANGED. THEIR. FORMULA. The current formula is hard to work with and doesn't have the silky quality that the old formula had.
Zuzu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner is smooth and luxurious. I tried "Tuareg," which is a mocha brown, and "Raven" (black). The "brush" is actually a felt-tip pen-type thing, which some people like, but I had some trouble getting used to it. I would recommend Zuzu Liquid Eyeliner for the fearless among us who want a very defined line. It's not subtle color, and it dries too fast to smudge it with a cotton swab.
Remember, you can use many eye pencils as liners . Some of them are labeled as liners, some are not. The important quality you want in a pencil liner is that it be soft enough to apply without tearing your eyelid apart. You can always "set" a creamy pencil liner with a cotton swab dipped into a small amount of translucent loose powder and then tapped over the liner.
