How to Cut Classic Bangs

You can do it yourself at home, and make them perfect each time.

Remember, your hair is shorter when it's dry. To get the best length for your bangs, hairdressers suggest cutting them when dry. But I've found I get a better cut if they're wet. So I cut them wet and just compensate by cutting them longer. When they dry, they're perfect.

Utensils:

Sharpest scissors you can find. Big hair clips for holding back non-bang hair. Big comb. Hair tape.

Prep:

1. Decide how much of your hair you want to "give up" for the bangs. That includes the sides.
2. Comb your hair forward from the farthest point. Then, from that point where your bangs will begin, draw an inverted "v" with your comb and clip the extra hair out of the way.

Cut:

For lush bangs that frame the face beautifully and are a little longer on the sides than in the middle -

Gather the to-be-bangs hair together in one spot in the middle of your forehead, and hold the hair with your left hand (if you're right handed).

Pull the hair straight down, and cut straight across.

Spread the bangs out to make sure they're the same length on each side, and straight in the middle. If not, make careful adjustments.

Now keep the bangs spread out where you want them (they're still wet), and make 4 or 5 small, vertical slices with your scissors, at even intervals across the bangs. You can choose how deep you want the slices. For classic bangs, make almost unnoticeable cuts of about ¼ inch. For chunkier bangs, make the wedge slices a little bigger.

Set

Apply goop (optional). Try PhomollientTM Styling Foam if your hair is fine or thin, their Hang StraightTM Straightening Lotion if your hair is curly and you want straight bangs, or Flax Seed Aloe Strong Hold Sculpturing Gel for strong-willed hair. (All by Aveda.)

Pinch the bangs back together in the center of your forehead, pull them down tight and secure at the bottom with hair tape.

Let them dry while you do something else.

When dry, take the tape off and spread your glorious new bangs across your forehead.
